Lick bowl with a light blue base, white body and an orange rolling ball on top.
  • A rolling ball in the middle turns under his tongue, so a spoonful lasts longer.
  • Low and wide, so he does not push his flat face into a deep channel.
  • Twists apart to fill and rinse, with the top keeping food in the bowl.
  • Made for wet food and spreadable toppers, not dry kibble.

The problem: a spoonful gone in a few licks

You put wet food on a saucer. A few licks later the saucer is shiny, and your Frenchie is staring at the fridge.

A flat plate gives him nothing to work at. The treat is over before you have put the spoon in the sink.

The fix: a bowl with a ball to lick around

This lick bowl has a ball in the middle and a ring of raised nubs around it. He licks the food from between the two.

The ball turns under his tongue, and food that clings to it holds it back. So the same spoonful takes longer, and he stays busy while you cook or answer the door.

The bowl is low and wide, so there is no deep channel for a flat face to push into.

What you get

A small bowl that twists apart into a white top, a blue base and the ball. You spoon wet or paste-style food into the base, set the ball back in and twist the top on. The top keeps the food from flying out when he nudges the ball.

The food matters. Thick, spreadable food clings and slows the ball. Thin, runny food lets it spin out of his way, so use something thicker.

Who it suits, and who it does not

It suits the Frenchie who clears a topper or a soft treat in seconds, and the owner who wants him occupied for a few minutes.

It is not a dinner bowl. The well is small, and dry kibble does not cling to the ball or stay in the nubs, so it will not slow a kibble meal.

Skip it if he chews everything. The ball and the top are not made for teeth, so take it away if he starts on the rim, and never leave him alone with it. And if he gags or food comes back up after meals, that is a question for your vet, not for a bowl.

How to start

Put a thin layer of food in the base and set the bowl on a rug for the first meals. Hold the base with one hand while he finds the nubs. On a hard floor, a rubber rug pad stops it sliding.

Watch his first licks. His tongue should reach the nubs without his jaw pressing on the rim.

Rinse all the pieces right after he finishes, brush the nubs, and let everything dry before you close it up. Dried food is hard to get out.

Frequently asked

What is a lick bowl for a French Bulldog?
It is a small bowl you fill with wet or paste-style food, with a ball in the middle he has to lick around. It is for a small portion of wet food, not for a full meal.
Can I put dry kibble in the lick ball bowl?
No. Kibble does not cling to the ball or stay in the nubs, so the bowl does nothing to slow it. Use wet, paste-style or liquid food.
Is this a slow feeder bowl for a French Bulldog?
Yes, for wet food. Food that clings to the ball holds it back, so he has to lick longer. Thin, runny food lets the ball spin, so choose something thicker.
How do I fill and clean a lick ball bowl?
Twist the white top off, lift out the ball, spoon food into the base, put the ball back and twist the top on. Rinse every piece right after, brush the nubs, and let it dry.
Will the bowl slide when my Frenchie licks it?
It can, on a hard floor. Feed the first meals on a rug and hold the base for the first licks. If it still moves, put a rubber rug pad under it.
