Round three-layer slow feeder bowl in green, purple and blue, shown from the side.
  • Stacked maze layers with hooks, waves and bumps, so kibble takes real work.
  • Rounded grooves that a flat face can reach into without pressing flat.
  • Anti-slip base that stays put on most floors while he eats.
  • Starts simple: begin with the bottom layer, add the others as he learns.

The problem: dinner gone before you turn around

You pour dinner and turn to rinse the scoop. When you look back, the bowl is empty and your Frenchie is licking the floor around it.

A plain bowl lets him eat at his own speed, and his own speed is fast.

The fix: a bowl that makes him work

This is a round bowl with layers stacked on a center post. Each layer has its own pattern of ridges, and the kibble sits in the gaps.

He cannot take a mouthful. He works the food out with his tongue, a few pieces at a time.

The bowl does not shrink dinner. It stretches the same dinner out.

The upper layers are cut into wedges, so the level below shows through and there is more than one place to look.

What you get

A green top layer with curved hooks, a purple middle layer with wavy channels, and a blue base with rounded bumps. A bone-shaped cap on top is the post that holds the stack together. Lift it off and the layers come apart for washing.

The edges are rounded, and the base has an anti-slip pad.

Who it suits, and who it does not

It suits the Frenchie who gulps dry kibble at home, and the one who has already beaten a simple maze.

It is not for a dog who does not gulp. A plain bowl does that job, and you will wash fewer pieces.

It is also not for a dog who gives up. If he stares at it, paws at it, or walks away with half his dinner left, a flatter bowl is a better start. We would rather you know that now.

If he gags, or food comes back up after meals, that is a question for your vet, not for a bowl.

How to start

Frenchies are stubborn, and a puzzle that is too hard on day one gets shoved across the kitchen. So start with the blue base alone. Add the other layers when he clears it easily.

Spread the food thin. A heap lets him scoop a mouthful off the top, and then the maze does nothing. Watch his first meal: his tongue should reach the bottom of the grooves without his face pressing flat into the bowl.

On tile or hardwood, put a rubber rug pad underneath. Take the bowl apart and rinse every layer after the meal, then let it dry before you stack it again.

This bowl is for eating from, not chewing, so take it away if he starts gnawing the edge.

Frequently asked

Does a slow feeder bowl work for a French Bulldog's short nose?
It can, if his tongue reaches the bottom of the grooves. Start with the blue base alone and watch the first meal. If his face presses flat or he walks away with food left, choose a flatter bowl.
What size slow feeder bowl does a French Bulldog need?
It comes in one size, and an adult Frenchie uses the full stack. A puppy can begin on the blue base alone. Check the table above for the exact measures.
Can I put wet food in this slow feeder bowl?
Yes, but press it into the grooves with the back of a spoon. Food that only sits on top is licked off in one pass. Rinse the layers right after the meal, before it dries.
Will this slow feeder bowl slide across the floor?
The base has an anti-slip pad, but a Frenchie who pushes with his nose can still move it. On tile or hardwood, put a rubber rug pad under it, or feed him in a corner.
How do I clean a layered slow feeder bowl?
Lift the cap, separate the layers and rinse each in warm water. Use a soft brush in the hooks and waves. Let everything dry, then press the cap down until the stack sits tight.
